Despite our best efforts to diet and exercise, we find that some areas of fat are very resistant. Maybe those “thunder thighs” just refuse to slim down, or the tummy fat persists even though you have lost weight. How about those “bye bye arms”? Thankfully, we have a tried and tested option to sculpt and remove unwanted fat in a quick, safe and effective manner.

Vaser, which stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance, received FDA clearance for body contouring in 2002. Since then, thousands of patients have undergone lipo-sculpting by Vaser worldwide, with very good results and a long safety record. At Freia, we have switched to using Vaser Liposelection since 2008 from the traditional liposuction technique and seen first-hand the improvement in terms of recovery and most importantly, the pleasing end-results of body contouring with Vaser Liposelection.

How is Vaser different from traditional liposuction?

In traditional liposuction, there are 2 main steps involved: infusing fluid into the treated area, followed by suctioning out the unwanted fatty tissue. Vaser is different because it has an additional step in between: The unique Vaser step uses medical ultrasound energy to selectively emulsify or melt fatty tissue. Under the right hands, this effective but safe technology makes removal of the unwanted fatty tissue much easier and more even. Less trauma to surrounding tissues means that you are on your feet — and looking great — faster than ever. In addition, Vaser helps to tighten the treated skin so that you experience better overall contouring of the area.

What areas of my body can be treated by Vaser?

Almost all parts of the body can be treated effectively by Vaser, but we find that the most common requests and best results are for the tummy, love handles, lower back, arms (triceps, biceps, elbow), underarms, pectoral and shoulder areas, thighs (inner and outer, front and back thighs), buttocks, calves, cheeks, lower jaw and double chin. In men, we have helped to remove unwanted fatty tissue in the chest area. This condition is sometimes referred to as pseudogynaecomastia, or "male boobs" (moobs) as many of our male patients like to call it. The results are predictable and consistent if performed on the right candidate and the right body part.

How long will the procedure take?

The procedure normally takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on the area involved and the amount of fatty tissue removed.

Will I feel anything during the procedure and afterwards?

The procedure is performed in our clinic under local anaesthesia. Patients have the option of being lightly sedated for increased comfort. When the procedure is completed, you will feel slightly tired and sore, like you just had an intense workout session at the gym. Over the next few days, you may feel mild soreness, which will be relieved by the pain-killers provided. In fact, many of our patients are pleasantly surprised at how little discomfort they feel.

What medication will I be given?

We routinely prescribe pain-killers, anti-swelling medication and a short course of antibiotics. Upon request, we can also provide Sinecch, a scientifically proven traditional medication which helps to resolve bruising and swelling much faster. We will discuss these options with you.

How long do I have to rest after the procedure?

Depending on the area treated, you will be advised to rest from 1 to 3 days. After that, you may resume light duties for another 2 weeks before gradually going back to your regular activities.

When can I see results of the procedure?

Almost immediately. You will notice significant thinning of the treated area. However, due to the swelling that follows in the next few days, the final results may not be seen until 2 months post-procedure.

How much fatty tissue can I remove in one session?

Based on MOH guidelines, we can safely remove up to 1 litre of pure fat in 1 session. If deemed necessary and usually where more than 1 area needs to be treated at the same time, we may advice to do the procedure at a day surgery centre.

Am I suitable for Vaser?

In general, you need to be healthy without any major illnesses, with a body mass index of 28 and below. The areas that can be treated successfully are often those that have persistent fatty tissue despite your best efforts. Our doctor will do a thorough assessment to determine fitness for surgery, including taking a medical history, physical examination and performing simple laboratory investigations as appropriate.

Is Vaser liposelection safe?

There are inherent risks associated with any kinds of surgery, and in particular, liposuction procedures. All aspects of the procedure will be thoroughly explained at your consultation to ensure you make an informed decision. Will there be a lot of loose skin after Vaser liposuction?

In general, if the skin tone is good and the right amount of fatty tissue is removed, there will not be loose skin. In fact, there are some studies to suggest that the Vaser ultrasonic energy may even contribute to a certain degree of skin tightening in suitable candidates. This will be thoroughly assessed and explained during the consultation.

Will Vaser or other forms of liposuction get rid of my stretch marks?

No, Vaser or liposuction are not known to remove stretch marks in general.

Can I transfer the fat removed to other parts of my body?

Yes. Increasingly, we are getting requests to transfer unwanted fats to other needy areas. Successful fat transfer areas include the face such as tear trough, cheeks, nasolabial folds, chest (male and females), buttocks, etc. Because the fat is your very own live tissue, there is no risk of allergic reaction or rejection.
