What is the Sciton MicroLaser Peel (MLP)?

The Sciton is an erbium-yag 2940nm laser that is designed to accurately exfoliate a very thin layer of outer, dull skin. It can precisely remove a few microns of skin as determined by the doctor performing the treatment. MLP can remove old skin so that the underlying newer skin can be revealed.

What types of condition does MLP treat?

If you have dull, aged, wrinkled skin due to age, smoking, excessive sun and pollution exposure, or simply want a rejuvenated and radiant look, MLP is the treatment for you. As the old skin peels off, you will experience a renewed appearance that chemical peels cannot achieve.

Is MLP painful?

MLP is performed after a topical anaesthetic cream has been applied for 30 minutes. As such, apart from a warm feeling, there is not much discomfort associated.

Is there any downtime for MLP?

Yes. As the skin undergoes a renewal process, there will be peeling and mild redness of the skin. This usually lasts from 3 to 7 days, depending on the depth of the MLP performed. Most patients are back at work within 2 to 3 days.

Are there any side effects of MLP?

Patients will expect some redness and peeling of the skin for a few days. In addition, they are advised to avoid excessive sun exposure to prevent transient post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Rarely, the PIH may be persistent in darker skinned patients.
